Paget's Disease

HSS is the #1 orthopedic hospital in the world and a national leader in rheumatology. This content was created by our physicians and experts.

Paget's disease, also known as osteitis deformans, is a chronic bone disorder. It generally affects the growth of new bone in adults, and it leads to the formation of abnormally large, weak bones that break easily. The malformed bone can lead to serious conditions such as joint, spine, and limb deformities, as well as pinched nerves and enlarged skull.

It is unknown what causes Paget's disease and there is no cure. Treatment includes imaging (X-rays), blood, and bone testing; medications to slow bone growth and manage pain; and surgery to repair and control the abnormal bone growth.
