Nursing and Patient Care Support

Magnet logo

HSS has become the first hospital in New York State to receive the nation's highest honor for nursing excellence five times. In fact, only one half of one percent of all hospitals in the U.S. have achieved a fifth Magnet designation.

Our Magnet nurses and patient care support professionals work with every one of our patients, every step of the way. When you join us, you’ll be supported by a team of experts who will offer you the advice and guidance you need to be exceptional.

Our Nursing Opportunities

The people who make it all happen.

Our Magnet nurses are on the front lines of patient care. From collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to providing essential, expert advice and support, we empower our nurses to continually raise the bar of patient-focused service. Being among the top-ranked hospitals for orthopedics and rheumatology, people visit us from around the world and we take great pride in helping them recover. We’re the only New York City hospital to have been awarded the Magnet Award five consecutive times, and this is a direct reflection of our compassionate and dedicated nursing teams. When you join HSS as a nurse, regardless of your specialty, you’ll be expected to contribute your brightest thinking – and your best nursing – to help our patients get back to what they need and love to do. It’s a big responsibility, but in return your talent will be appreciated and your hard work will be recognized. So from quality and assurance nurses who conduct research into patient care to nurse practitioners who help our patients and their families through the process, you’ll be joining a team who has a genuine impact on every one of our patients’ lives.

Nurses (RN/LPN)

As individuals dedicated to ensuring the safety and quick recovery of our patients, our nurses perform an extraordinary role at HSS.

As an RN, you’ll handle everything from collecting essential information on a patient’s health to helping develop individualized care plans. It’s a role that requires patience, understanding, knowledge and compassion, but one you won’t do alone. At HSS, you’ll be surrounded by experts who will ensure you have the support and guidance you need to get the job done. As an LPN, you’ll assist our physicians in their offices during procedures. From delivering exceptional customer service to ensuring the environment is always organized and professional, you’ll be expected to promote the highest standards of patient safety while being an advocate for the patients’ individual needs throughout their treatment.

Nurse Residents/Externs

Each member of the HSS family excels at what they do and we know our people can only perform at their best if we give them the tools they need to thrive. Our residency programs are designed to smoothly facilitate the transition of graduate RNs into practicing nurses and our commitment to clinical excellence means you’ll be surrounded by people who are just as invested in our residents as they are in the treatment of our patients. We offer three nurse residence programs, each individualized to suit the pace of your progression, ensuring you feel comfortable and prepared before moving into a clinical setting. At HSS you’ll be positioned for success because the better we take care of our people, the better they take care of our patients.

Educators

Our nursing educators act as trusted resources across HSS. They develop, implement and manage the health education strategies we need to deliver a trusted service. You’ll work in an environment where your ideas will be welcomed. Working with colleagues from across departments you’ll help develop best practice techniques that ensure the experience our patients have is as transparent as humanly possible.

Case Managers & Quality Management Specialists

When you join HSS as a case manager, you’ll play an essential role in affecting the patient experience across the continuum of care. In applying your broad spectrum of nursing skills and knowledge, you’ll tailor our services to meet each patient’s individual needs while coordinating evidence-based care.

As a quality management specialist, you will work collaboratively with high-functioning professional practice teams to identify, track and analyze patient outcomes based on statistical data and trends. Using your clinical knowledge and expertise, you’ll have the opportunity to personally contribute to the level of excellence in patient care through the coordination of peer review, the evaluation of key performance indicators, and your efforts to support accreditation readiness.

Surgical & Central Sterile Technicians

Our surgical technicians play a critical role in our patients’ overall well-being. Here, you’ll be responsible for upholding the highest standards of care, while collaborating with our surgical team to make sure our patients are safe. You will assist physicians and nurses in surgery using best practices. As a central sterile technician, you’ll provide the sterile supplies, instruments and equipment our patients need for safe and successful orthopedic surgery. We'll rely on you to support all patient care areas by properly processing surgical equipment using washers, sterilizers, dryers, and heat sealers. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring the lowest level infection rates– and in doing so, you’ll have a direct impact on our success.

Patient Care Assistants

Making the care process as manageable and stress-free as possible for patients is part of our mission at HSS. Joining us as a patient care assistant, you’ll treat our patients and their families with the respect they deserve. Acting as the main point of contact throughout their time with us you’ll assist staff nurses in developing patient care plans, monitoring changes in patient conditions, supporting admission and discharge processes and making the overall experience for everyone involved as smooth as possible. At HSS, you’ll have the opportunity to demonstrate your expertise, pride and compassion in an environment dedicated to helping the people we care for.
