About Dr. McLawhorn
Dr. Alexander S. McLawhorn, MD, MBA is a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the #1 ranked hospital for orthopedics in the United States. He provides individualized hip and knee replacement care to active adults in the New York Metropolitan area and Southern Connecticut.
Dr. McLawhorn performs over 600 joint replacement procedures annually, making him one of the most experienced hip and knee replacement surgeons in the region. He specializes in direct anterior total hip replacement (THR) — including the “bikini incision” — as well as robotic and computer-assisted hip replacement, hip resurfacing, and rapid-recovery joint replacement. He is among the nation’s highest-volume surgeons for robot-assisted direct anterior THR, performing more than 400 robotic hip surgeries each year.
Dr. McLawhorn has been recognized as one of the top joint replacement surgeon by volume and experience in the United States, New York, and Connecticut, and he was named the “best value” for joint replacement in New York City, achieving superior outcomes at lower overall cost.

His current research is focused on improving the value and outcomes of arthritis care worldwide.
