The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at HSS is a comprehensive, ACGME-accredited program jointly sponsored by Weill Cornell Medical College, offering a robust training experience for fellows aspiring to specialize in neuromuscular medicine. Upon successful completion, fellows are recognized as diplomates of both HSS and Weill Cornell. This fellowship provides a well-rounded curriculum designed to develop diagnostic and management skills in neuromuscular medicine.

Key Features of the Fellowship

• Clinical Experience with Faculty: Fellows will see patients in the practices of seven attending physicians specializing in neuromuscular diseases, broadening their clinical acumen. They will also learn to perform office procedures, including nerve conduction study/electromyography (NCS/EMG), skin biopsy, and chemodenervation. 
• Multidisciplinary Experience: Fellows participate in weekly multidisciplinary care programs in collaboration with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the ALS Association (ALSA), providing hands-on experience with a variety of neuromuscular disorders.
• Electrodiagnostic Training: The fellowship provides extensive training in electrodiagnostic studies (NCS/EMG), with direct supervision from ABPN-certified Neuromuscular Medicine and Clinical Neurophysiology specialists. Fellows will gain expertise in conducting these studies on complex patients.
• Neuromuscular Pathology Training: HSS neurology has a neuromuscular pathology laboratory, processing and interpreting nerve, muscle, and skin biopsies. Fellows will learn neuromuscular pathology through regular slides review sessions. Fellows will also observe nerve and muscle biopsies.  
• Clinical Research Experience: Fellows will participate in various clinical trials, expanding their exposure to cutting-edge clinical studies.

Rotations

• Weill Cornell Medical College / NYP Hospital Rotations: Fellows will rotate through NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital, gaining expertise in neurorehabilitation and critical care of neuromuscular patients in ICU settings.
• Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Rotation: This outpatient rotation allows fellows to evaluate and manage neuromuscular conditions associated with neoplastic disorders, enhancing their understanding of oncologic neurology.

Didactic Program

The fellowship includes a structured didactic program, which consists of:

• Weekly Lectures: Fellows will attend weekly lectures, covering a range of topics in neuromuscular medicine.
• Grand Rounds: Fellows participate in weekly Neurology Grand Rounds at Weill Cornell and weekly Neuromuscular Grand Rounds at HSS, allowing them to engage with faculty and peers on complex case discussions.
• EMG Morning Report: Daily EMG morning reports provide fellows with regular case reviews and opportunities for discussion.

Certification Opportunities

Upon completion, fellows are eligible for certification in Neuromuscular Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Additionally, they are eligible for certification by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM), providing them with dual certification in neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine.
