Pediatric Specialties and Services
At HSS Lerner Children's Pavilion, your child benefits from a multidisciplinary team of experts who collaborate to deliver the best possible care. Beyond specialized medical treatment, we offer comprehensive support and programs for children and their families, empowering them to thrive.

Pediatric Orthopedics
Our team of board-certified, specialty-trained pediatric orthopedic doctors provide expert care for thousands of infants, children, and adolescents each year for diverse congenital, developmental, and traumatic musculoskeletal conditions.
Pediatric Rheumatology
Our pediatric rheumatologists expertly manage complex autoimmune diseases in children, addressing varied symptoms like fevers, joint pain, and rashes, as well as potential internal organ involvement and long-term health effects.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Our multidisciplinary team specializes in neurodevelopmental, orthopedic, and sports rehabilitation. They provide programs to enhance performance and prevent injuries, as well as developmental services for infants and toddlers.
Pediatric Radiology and Imaging
The HSS imaging center is a child-friendly space staffed by radiologists and technologists experienced in diagnosing pediatric conditions with the latest X-ray, MRI and CT scan technology. HSS is one of a few hospitals in the tri-state area with the low-dose EOS X-ray machine.
Pediatric Anesthesia
Our specialists use the most advanced methods and techniques including regional anesthesia, a technique that temporarily numbs specific areas of the body, to minimize pain during and after surgery. This approach is particularly beneficial for orthopedic procedures in children.
Pediatric Perioperative Medicine
HSS pediatricians specialize in the medical care of children undergoing surgery. They work closely with pediatric orthopedic surgeons to optimize a child's health before and after surgery.

Pediatric Social Work
Our team of Licensed Social Workers and Registered Nurses is here to support you and your family throughout your child's healthcare journey, from pre-admission to post-discharge. They offer a range of services, including emotional support, counseling, and assistance with questions about care, insurance, finances, and community resources.
Child Life Program
The Child Life Program at HSS aims to make hospital stays more positive for children and their families. Child Life staff collaborates with families and the healthcare team to prepare children for medical procedures using age-appropriate language, introduce coping strategies to help children and families manage stress, provide opportunities for fun and normal development, and improve the overall hospital experience for children and families.
Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy
The Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy offers pediatric patients a chance to develop skills and interests while staying active. The events encourage the children to engage in new activities and use their bodies in different ways, reinforcing their therapy goals. Beyond the physical benefits, many experience increased self-confidence and independence. The outings also foster social connections among the children and their families or caretakers, creating lasting friendships.
Leon Root, MD, Pediatric Outreach Program (POP)
A pioneer in pediatric orthopedic surgery, Dr. Root launched the Pediatric Outreach Program, known as POP in 1987. HSS physicians and other health professionals go into schools in diverse communities in New York City to provide free bone, muscle and joint evaluations. Undiagnosed scoliosis and other conditions are often detected, and students referred for treatment.
