About Dr. Ritzl

Dr. Ritzl completed her Medical School in her native Germany. She trained in Internal Medicine in Scotland before training in Neurology and Neurophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital / Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore respectively. She served as Director of the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Program and the Continuous Video EEG Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 15 years. Just prior to coming to HSS, she served as Chief of Service of the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Division of Mass General Brigham in Boston.

Research

Dr. Ritzl's research in intraoperative neuromonitoring and EEG monitoring has contributed significantly to the literature, enhancing clinical practices and patient outcomes: Examples in the field of intraoperative neuromonitoring include a provocative testing methodology for AVM embolizations near peripheral nerves and the bridge grounding method for peripheral nerve inching. In the field of EEG monitoring, Dr. Ritzl studies EEG predictors of successful treatment of status epilepticus (SE), the characteristics of sedation associated encephalopathy that may be confused with SE as well as EEG markers of arousal in various health conditions.
